A proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary between your network and the Internet. It also filters the requests from each computer for content and protects its client computers from unauthorized access. Furthermore, it stores the visited web pages in its cache memory and, when those pages are requested by users, delivers them to the computers without going back to the Internet, thus speeding up the process. A proxy server is usually a computer system on your network run by your network administrator. You need two pieces of information to configure the proxy server settings on your machine: the IP address of the proxy server and the port number that the server uses for connections with the computers on the network. Both of those pieces of information are easy to obtain from your network administrator. Here are some additional pointers to guide you through configuration.

Steps (Tap on step to mark as complete)

  • Open your Internet Explorer browser.

  • Click on the "Tools" tab in the top menu bar.

  • Click on "Internet Options." This will bring up the "Internet Options" window.

  • Click on the "Connections" tab.

  • Click on "LAN Settings" button in the bottom portion of the window. This will bring up the "LAN Settings" window.

  • Type the IP address of the proxy server in the "IP Address" box.

  • Type the port number in the "Port" box (usually number 8080, but check with your network administrator).

  • Click "OK" to close the "LAN Settings" window.

  • Click "OK" to close the "Internet Options" window. You are now ready to surf the Internet through your proxy server connection.
